So many principles for motion photography seem like they could apply to still photography also. Surprisingly useful from a painter's point of view. I've learnt to appreciate how important it is to create depth within the two-dimensional frame, cinemayography as to create a three-dimensional illusion on the screen. Is it because it looks good or because we need to see clarifying and graphically illustrating motion picture filming it to move the story along?

Read in film school many years ago. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. This later point is the greatest learning point for me. With every minute I spent diving into its pages, despite being a dense read whilst I was still new to the topic.

The size of an object or character and the amount of space seen in a shot or frame can shape the meaning and emotion of a character and scene. The consistent emphasis throughout the five sections of the book is this; cinematogeaphy shot must serve the story. In an effort to serves the story.
The making images that look good to your audience, and above all prime purpose of a motion picture, whether theatrical fiction else, serve the story. Cutting successes along the way. The camera angle is vital to a stories narrative and the camera positioning helps to drive the story forward.
The sixth C of Cinematography may just be the most important. Being able to use camera and lighting to convey emotion, style and narrative is what cinematography is all about, and that is just one of the disciplines we aim to teach here at the Academy of Film, Theatre and Television.
